Carlos Checa claims double win in Misano

Carlos Checa has continued his 2011 title blitz, winning race one and two of World Superbike's sixth round at Misano ahead of Max Biaggi and Marco Melandri.

Race Two
Checa blitzed the field under sunny race conditions to take a double after a crash for Marco Melandri brought out the red flag just 10 laps into the second race. That set up a 14 lap sprint in the second leg, with Checa charging ahead of Max Biaggi and Noriyuki Haga to take the race.
Suffering from his practice crash, Troy Corser pulled out of race one early and never made the grid for race two, while fellow Aussie Mark Aitchison slipped to 16th with a mechanical issue in race one before retiring on lap six of race two.
The third Australian in the field, Chris Vermeulen, had a difficult run to 14th in race one before completing race two for the first time in 2011 a stellar 10th place.
Checa now leads the championship on 245 points from Biaggi on 173. Melandri's crash sees him slip to 23 points adrift of his compatriot on 150 points.

Race One
The Spaniard had to get a lift back to Parc Ferme from fellow Spaniard Ruben Xaus after stalling his bike during the celebration lap.
It was the second week in a row Checa has had difficulty celebrating a race one win after crashing in the mud at Miller post-race.
With Jonathon Rea absent from 11th on the grid following a crash in the morning warm-up, Tom Sykes led the World Superbike field off the line at his home race, at least until turn four when compatriot Leon Haslam pounced.
Despite starting seventh on the grid, reigning champion Max Biaggi barged to the lead on lap two ahead of Haslam on the BMW who would only make it to lap nine before he was ejected from his bike in a frightening high-side.
Michele Fabrizio never made it past lap two, the Italian crashing out at the tight hairpin while Jakub Smrz’s run came to an end on lap three, the Czech rider high-siding out of the final turn in front of the field and lucky not to be hit.
Troy Corser and Noriyuki Haga were the next retirements, Haga pulling off track with a mechanical issue while Corser was still suffering the effects of his massive crash in practice.
Current points leader Carlos Checa reeled in and passed reigning champion Biaggi on lap 12 as the two raced a battle of their own at the front.
Checa edged out a small margin when Biaggi ran wide with nine laps to go, and from there was never really challenged for the win, coming home 1.6 seconds clear of Biaggi with Melandri a further 14 seconds behind.
Australian Mark Aitchison got as high 12th before a mechanical issue ended his solid run just three laps from home, while Chris Vermeulen in his first real return to World Superbike in 2011 managed to get home for 14th as Aitchison limped across the line for 16th, one lap down.

MISANO (Rimini) domenica 12 giugno 2011 – Max Biaggi stringe i denti, soffre per la microfrattura alla cartilagine dell'astragalo del piede sinistro ma non può nulla contro Carlos Checa che domina anche a Misano e vola alla conquista della Superbike. La Ducati ha dominato con il 38enne spagnolo la sesta prova (su tredici) del Mondiale a Misano compiendo un altro passo verso l'iride: per Checa si tratta infatti dell'ottavo trionfo in stagione, 13° della carriera. La marca italiana raggiunge quota 299 successi in 576 gare iridate.

gara 1 — Nella prima gara Biaggi era scattato benissimo dalla seconda fila prendendo il comando al secondo giro. Ma Checa, quarto all'inizio, è stato implacabile, ha annullato in fretta il secondo di divario e prima di metà gara ha compiuto, con facilità, il sorpasso decisivo. Podio completato da Marco Melandri (Yamaha) giunto terzo, ma con un ritardo abissale, più di 18 secondi.
gara 2 — È stata fermata al decimo dei ventiquattro giri per la scivolata di Melandri volato sull'olio. Poco dopo la corsa è ripartita da zero per completare la distanza senza Melandri impossibilitato a riportare la Yamaha in griglia nei cinque minuti regolamentari. Lo stop non ha cambiato nulla: Biaggi è ripartito davanti, ma Checa lo ha braccato senza pietà finchè Max non ha commesso un errore alla curva del Tramonto spalancando la porta al più forte. A sette round dalla fine (quattordici gare) Carlito sale a 245 punti guadagna ulteriore terreno sugli inseguitori italiani: Biaggi 173 punti, Melandri 150. Elias takes positive 11th in a thrilling french gp

Le Mans, 15 May: In a thrilling 28-lap race LCR Honda MotoGP rider Toni Elias finished 11th in today’s French Grand Prix at a cloudy “24 heures circuit du Mans” which saw Stoner taking his second victory. Toni Elias had a tough time in qualifying, ending yesterday afternoon’s session in 17th, albeit only 2.280s down on pole position but the Spaniard took a good start from the last spot on the grid engaging a close battle with a 4-rider group.

At 15 laps to go, when he was leading the group, Elias had a small highside banging his foot on the bike but he stayed on proceeding his positive race and gaining further 5 points in the world standing. Elias will return on track for his home GP in Catalunya on the 5th of June.

Elias - 11th: "We have been afraid about the warm up of the tyres because the track temperature was colder compared to the practices but at the end it was not so bad. Our rear traction problem is not solved yet but now I can see progressive improvements and I want to thank the team for their good work. When I was leading the small group in the back I thought that I could catch Aoyama but suddenly I have suffered a bike shaking banging my feet on the fairing. My leather security airbag activated and I could not ride properly for a couple of laps till it went down. After that I pushed to catch the group again but could not finish in the top ten. Anyway it has been a positive week end and I hope to see a further improvements at my home GP".




ELIAS TERMINA 11° IN UN ELETTRIZZANTE GP DI FRANCIA




Le Mans, 15 May: il pilota del Team LCR Honda MotoGP Toni Elias ha concluso in 11° posizione il GP di Francia che si è svolto oggi sotto un cielo minaccioso sul circuito “24 Heures du Mans” che ha visto Stoner aggiudicarsi la seconda vittoria in sella alla Honda. Toni Elias ha sofferto un poco nelle qualifiche di ieri terminando solo 17° ma senza perdersi d’animo è partito bene dall’ultima fila infilandosi in una quartetto molto agguerrito.

A 15 giri dalla fine, quando Elias era in testa al gruppetto, la moto ha preso un’imbracata e lo Spagnolo ha urtato il piede sulla carena ma è rimasto saldamente in sella per finire la gara e portare a casa altri 5 punti nella classifica Mondiale. Elisa sarà di nuovo in pista il prossimo 5 Giugno per il suo GP di casa a Montmeló (Catalogna).

Elias – 11°: "Eravamo un po’ preoccupati perché l’asfalto era più freddo rispetto alle prove e temevamo di non riuscire a scaldare abbastanza le gomme ma alla fine la situazione non era così male. Ci resta sempre il problema di trazione da risolvere ma adesso vedo dei miglioramenti e questa progressione mi rende più sereno. Quando ero in testa al gruppetto ho pensato di poter prendere anche Aoyama lì davanti ma quell’imbarcata a metà gara mi ha spiazzato. Ho battuto il piede sulla carena e l’airbag della tuta si è attivato: per quasi 2 giri non sono riuscito a guidare agilmente ma quando si è sgonfiato ho ripreso il mio ritmo. Non sono riuscito a chiudere nei primi dieci ma questo è stato un altro week end positivo e spero di vedere altri miglioramenti nel GP di casa mia".

Carlos Checa increased his lead in the Superbike World Championship with his fourth win of the season from six races.

The Althea Ducati rider now leads on 132 points to the 89 of Alitalia Aprilia's Max Biaggi, the reigning champion, after taking the second race win at Assen in the Netherlands. Marco Melandri, on the factory Yamaha, lies in third place on 85 points with Castrol Honda's Jonathan Rea, who won the first race today, moving up to fourth on 79.

Rea took his first win of the season in race one ahead of Biaggi and Checa. Fourth went to Melandri, with Michel Fabrizio (Suzuki Alstare) fifth and Troy Corser (BMW) in sixth. Leon Haslam, Corser's team-mate, survived a fast early crash to recover to finish 12th but saw his title hopes take a bad hit.

Checa and Biaggi fought it out for the victory in race two and it looked as if the latter would win it after passing the long-time leader late on. However, Checa reclaimed the lead on the final lap to extend his points advantage to 43 with his fourth win in the season's six races.

Rea won the contest with Melandri for third when the Yamaha rider fell, with Biaggi's team-mate Leon Camier claiming fourth ahead of Haslam and Eugene Laverty on the second factory Yamaha

PRIMI PUNTI MONDIALI PER ELIAS SOTTO LA PIOGGIA DI JEREZ Jerez, 3 Aprile: dopo due giorni di sole e caldo il primo GP Europeo sulla pista di Jerez de la Frontera si è corso oggi sul bagnato con l’asfalto che tocca solo i 15 gradi. I 27 giri in programma alle 14:00 ora locale hanno visto i piloti della classe regina allinearsi sotto un cielo grigio e dopo diverse cadute lo Spagnolo Lorenzo trionfa seguito da Pedrosa e Hayden. Nonostante le pessime condizioni del tracciato, il pilota del Team LCR Honda MotoGP Toni Elias è partito dall’ultima fila terminando il GP di casa con un ottimo nono posto. Lo Spagnolo ha tenuto il suo ritmo sino all’ultimo giro mentre alcuni dei suoi “colleghi” sono finiti fuori pista a causa dell’asfalto insidioso. Grazie alla sua tenacia Elias è riuscito a portare a casa i primi 7 punti nella classifica Mondiale anche se il 28-enne sa benissimo che c’è ancora molto lavoro da fare in vista delle prossime gare. Elias tornerà in sella alla sua RC212V il prossimo 1 Maggio per il GP del Portogallo. Elias - 9°: “Onestamente non sono entusiasta di questa gara perché non riesco ancora a guidare la moto come vorrei ma senza dubbio questo nono posto, viste le condizioni della pista, è molto positivo per me ed il Team. Lo so benissimo che sono stato fortunato visto che diversi piloti sono usciti di pista ma io non ho mollato ed ho terminato la gara nonostante l’usura delle gomme che ha condizionato tutti visto che abbiamo avuto solo il warm up per provare sotto l’acqua. ELIAS SCORES HIS FIRST POINTS OF THE SEASON IN THE WET AT JEREZ Jerez, 3 April : after two days of summer weather, the first round of 2011 season at Jerez de la Frontera was run on the wet today with track temperature of 15 degrees only. The 27-lap race has started at 14:00 local time with the premier class riders lining up under cloudy skies at the South Spain race track which saw Lorenzo winning ahead Pedrosa and Hayden. Despite the bad conditions the LCR Honda MotoGP racer Toni Elias started from the last spot on the grid ending the race with a positive 9th position. The Spaniard has the capability to keep his pace till the last lap while some of his “colleagues” crashed out because of the slippery surface. Thanks to his determination Elias has gained his first 7 points in the official standing but needs further set up adjustments to improve his performances aboard the RC212V. LCR Team will be back on track on the 1st of May for the Portoguese GP. Elias – 9th: “Honestly I am not happy about the performance as my feeling on the bike was still bad but the 9th position in these conditions is a positive result for me and the Team. I know I have been lucky because many riders crashed out and I was capable to end the race although the tyres situation was very difficult for everybody because we just had the warm up session on the wet. However we must continue our good job to improve our future performances....I am aware of this and want to thank my Team for their efforts

Photograph: Rui Vieira/PA Carlos Checa extended his lead in the World Superbike championship to 19 points after finishing in third and first in the two races at Donington Park. The Althea Racing Ducati rider fought his way up to third in race one and then won second time out as reigning champion Max Biaggi was disqualified. The Aprilia Alitalia rider was excluded for jumping the start and dropped to fourth in the overall points standings. The Yamaha rider Marco Melandri moved up to second in the championship after winning the first race and taking a fighting second in race two. Britain's Leon Haslam fought hard to finish fourth in both races to move above Biaggi to third in the points on his BMW. Melandri won race one from the Effenberg Ducati of Jakub Smrz and Checa, with the championship leader winning from Melandri and the Aprilia Alitalia of Leon Camier in race two. Camier was the only home rider to make it on to the podium and was relieved to recover from illness which had dogged him in Australia. He said: "I started the year with glandular fever for the first race. To come here and to have a podium at my home race is awesome." Melandri took the first race win after a poor start which saw him down in ninth place at the end of the first lap. But the Italian worked his way through the pack to claim top spot as he passed Smrz on lap 21 of 23. Smrz was able to finish a comfortable second for the best result of his career after he had taken over first place on lap seven from Haslam. It was a poor race for the British rider after a good start which had seen him lead for the first six laps. Checa was another rider to have a bad start and had to rise from 11th on lap one to claim the final podium spot on the final lap. Haslam looked set for third but was overtaken by the Spaniard at the Melbourne Hairpin and the championship leader held on to the position through the final corner. Behind Haslam came Jonathan Rea, Nori Haga, Biaggi, Camier, Troy Corser and Joan Lascorz. Tom Sykes was lying fourth when he crashed on lap 12 and Eugene Laverty went out on the fourth lap when lying 12th.

Il campionato Mondiale Superbike 2011 e' iniziato nel migliore dei modi per il team Althea Racing e Carlos Checa che ha dominato per tutto il weekend e ha vinto entrambe le manche oggi a Phillip Island in modo molto convincente. E' stato un weekend perfetto per Carlos che ha chiuso ogni sessione in prima posizione, ha conquistato la Superpole ed ha festeggiato oggi la vittoria in entrambe le manche.
Gara 1: Purtroppo alcune sezioni della pista sono rimaste umide dopo le abbondanti piogge cadute in mattinata. Carlos e' partito comunque molto forte, trovandosi in seconda posizione alla fine del primo giro, alle spalle di Laverty sulla Yamaha. Nell'arco di solo due giri lo spagnolo e' riuscito a sorpassare il pilota irlandese per prendere il comando. A quel punto ha cominciato ad aumentare subito il suo vantaggio sugli inseguitori e a metà gara il portacolori del team Althea riusciva a gestire un vantaggio di 4 secondi su Biaggi, che transitava in seconda posizione. Carlos ha saputo gestire perfettamente anche l'ultima fase della gara, senza prendere rischi, ed è andato a vincere la prima gara della stagione in modo convincente, davanti a Biaggi (Aprilia) e Haslam (BMW).
Gara 2: Dopo una buona partenza Carlos si trovava ancora una volta in seconda posizione. Dopo solo poche curve riusciva a scavalcare Haslam per la prima posizione, ma in rettilineo il pilota inglese gli rispondeva subito. Nel giro successivo Checa si gettava ancora all'attacco e questa volta conquistava la prima posizione in modo definitivo senza dare la possibilità ai suoi avversari di replicare. Da quel punto in poi, il pilota spagnolo ha corso una gara solitaria, aumentando costantemente il suo vantaggio e replicando quindi la prima manche. Carlos passava sotto la bandiera a scacchi con un vantaggio di oltre un secondo su Biaggi e Melandri, rispettivamente secondo e terzo.
Dopo il primo dei tredici eventi del calendario 2011 del mondiale Superbike, Carlos Checa, con i punti accumulati oggi, comanda la classifica dei piloti con 50 punti mentre, grazie alle eccezionali prestazioni del pilota del team Althea, la Ducati comanda la classifica costruttori.Carlos Checa (Gara 1 - vincitore, Gara 2 - vincitore)"Le prove sono andate benissimo e sapevamo di avere un buon ritmo, ma in gara non si sa mai quello che può succedere, specialmente quanto alla mattina trovi la pista bagnata, come in questa occasione. La mia strategia era di mettermi davanti e fare il passo perche' sapevo che era superiore a quello di miei rivali. In Gara 1, una volta passato Laverty, sono riuscito a trovare un buon ritmo. E' stata una bellissima gara. Capita ogni tanto e siamo stati fortunati ad iniziare questa stagione in un modo così strepitoso. Gara 2 e' stata molto simile, ho gestito bene tutta la gara e ce l'abbiamo fatta! E' stato un weekend fantastico, abbiamo dominato dall'inizio alla fine. Siamo stati fortunati anche con il tempo; cominciare un campionato meglio di cosi' non si puo'. Vorrei ringraziare la Ducati e tutto il team per aver avuto fiducia in me; adesso andremo a Donington e continueremo a dare il massimo."

The 2011 World Superbike Championship began in the best possible way for the Althea Racing team and Carlos Checa who, after a weekend of domination, stormed to victory in both of today's races at Phillip Island. It was a perfect weekend for Carlos and his Ducati 1198; he finished every session in front and snatched pole before running away with the double victory this afternoon.
Race 1: unfortunately certain sections of the track were still damp after a shower earlier in the day. Carlos nevertheless got away fast, finding himself in second position, behind Laverty on the Yamaha, by the end of the first lap. The Spanish rider made light work of passing Laverty a couple of laps later, to take command of the race. He immediately began to build up a gap and by mid-race he had a four second advantage over Biaggi in second position. Checa made no mistakes in managing the last phase and won this first race in convincing style, ahead of Biaggi (Aprilia), second, and Haslam (BMW), third.
Race 2: Carlos was once again in second place at race start; after the first corners, he was able to find a way past Haslam to take the lead, but the Englishman quickly responded. During the following lap Checa was back on the attack and this time he regained control in definitive fashion. From that point on, he ran a solitary race, managing his advantage in a near replica of race 1. He passed the chequered flag with an advantage of more than a second over Biaggi and Melandri in second and third respectively.
After the first of thirteen Superbike events, Carlos Checa, with today's points, commands the rider's classification with 50 points while, thanks to Carlos' performance, Ducati leads the way in the manufacturer's standings.

My strategy was to get ahead and keep pace as I knew my pace was stronger than that of my rivals. In Race 1, once past Laverty, I was able to find a good rhythm. It was a really great race. Every so often you have a weekend like that and we were lucky to be able to start the season in such a fantastic way. Race 2 was very similar, I managed the situation and we did it! A really great weekend in which we dominated from start to finish. We were also lucky with the weather; we couldn't have asked for a better start. I want to thank Ducati and the team for believing in me. Next we head to Donington where we'll continue to give 100%.

OTTIMI PROGRESSI PER CARLOS CHECA ED IL TEAM ALTHEA RACING SUL BAGNATO A PORTIMAO
Portimao (Portogallo), giovedi’ 27 gennaio 2011: si è concluso il secondo giorno di test ufficiali per le squadre Superbike al Autodromo Internacional do Algarve; il team Althea Racing e Carlos Checa hanno continuato a fare notevoli progressi nonostante le difficili condizioni meteorologiche.
La pioggia della mattina ha tenuto tutti i piloti SBK nel box per una buona parte della prima sessione. Solo nell’ultima fase della sessione otto piloti hanno scelto di uscire sull’asfalto bagnato, Carlos incluso, ed è stato proprio lo spagnolo a fare i giri più veloci, registrando tempi molto interessanti considerando le condizioni meteo e della pista e facendo segnare 1’56.1 come miglior giro.
Sfortunatamente un altro acquazzone subito prima della seconda sessione pomeridiana ha reso il tracciato sempre piu’ bagnato, impedendo ai piloti di migliorare i tempi di ieri. Carlos e’ sceso comunque in pista, insieme alla maggior parte dei piloti, per fare una prova delle gomme rain. Negli ultimi minuti della sessione i tempi hanno cominciato a calare ma Carlos ha preferito non prendere rischi, concentrandosi invece sulla messa a punto della sua 1198 . Il portacolori del team Althea ha concluso questo secondo giorno di prove con un ottima terza posizione.
“Abbiamo fatto un bel lavoro che penso ci abbia dato degli utili riferimenti” ha commentato Carlos. “Ovviamente preferiamo girare in condizioni di asciutto, ma è molto importante poter girare e provare anche sul bagnato. L’anno scorso abbiamo avuto pochissime opportunita’ di girare con questa moto su tracciati bagnati quindi ci voleva una giornata cosi’, per poter lavorare un po’ sull’elettronica e sull’assetto in configurazione rain. Oggi ho trovato presto un buon feeling che mi potrà essere molto utile se nel corso della stagione che sta per iniziare ci troveremo ad affrontare queste stesse condizioni”.
