SBK Assen

This week WSBK arrives in the Netherlands to launch off Round 4 of the series. After Leon Haslam’s terrific rides and Sylvain Guintoli's admirable performances, the Suzuki Alstare team has high hopes going into this round at Assen. With a comfortable 18-point lead over Alitalia Aprilia’s Max Biaggi and placing only once off the podium, Haslam feels extremely confident in both his team and equipment. However, this year’s new track modification at Assen has many talking. The world famous Circuit van Drenthe is now 4.542 km due to changes in multiple areas of the Ruskenhoek chicane, making it shorter overall by a handful of meters and a slightly faster circuit. This change is sure to provide riders with some surprises, and it should make for some heated racing. Haslam and Biaggi remain the frontrunners after Round 3 at Valencia. With the Alstare Suzuki rider consistently pulling off wins and podiums and his point separation from the pack growing, it may seem like his championship title is well in the making. The season is still incredibly young, however, and we can’t forget about Mad Max’s sweep at Portimao, where he took both race victories directly ahead of Haslam. Biaggi also took podiums in both races at Valencia, finishing ahead of Haslam in Race 2. With these types of performances it’s a mistake to say the Roman Emperor will settle for second at Assen.
Biaggi is currently second in the overall point standings. His victories at Portimao are still fresh in his mind, and his strong showing at Valencia has given him hope and confidence for the upcoming race at Assen. The battle behind Biaggi is getting heated as Althea Racing’s Carlos Checa and Ducati Xerox Team rider Noriyuki Haga compete for the points lead. Checa is currently third in the overall standings at 80 points. With a win in Phillip Island and a second place finish in Valencia his team is in good spirits about his prospective performance at Assen. Having already placed on the podium twice at the same track in 2008, Checa heads to Assen with pelnty of podium-topping potential. Meanwhile, Noriyuki rests just behind him in the standings with 79 points. Nitro Nori was able to take advantage of a red flag at Valencia’s Race 2 for his first victory of the season ahead of Haslam, Biaggi and Checa."I was very happy to win at Valencia, my first win of the season and I will do my best to back it up with two great races at Assen. Last year went well for us here, actually better than ever before at this track, and at this point I am very aware that I need two similar results this season in order to close the gap," Haga said.
Ducati's Nitro Nori pulled off his first victory of the season at Valencia. He sits just behind Carlos Checa in points and will be looking for a strong performance at Assen to push ahead in the standings. Haga has consistently placed in the top 10, and will be someone to look out for at Assen. Having a slight advantage at this year’s new track layout is Hannspree Ten Kate Honda’s Jonathan Rea and Max Neukirchner. Currently fifth in the point standings, Rea - along with teammate Neukirchner- had a chance to ride the Assen circuit with a two-day test last week. "We had a great test at Assen last week to work on making a good bike even better. The revised corner is fast but I really like the track anyway and I've done OK here in the last couple of years. It's obviously difficult to know how it'll transfer to other circuits but it worked OK at Assen and, without getting ahead of ourselves, I found it quite easy to adapt my riding style to suit the change.” While both are still adapting to their bikes, this sneak preview of the track should make for a quick start to practice and qualifying. Currently seventh in the overall rankings is Haslam’s Suzuki teammate Guintoli. Sharing 50 points in the championship chase along with former two-time World Superbike Champion James Toseland, it will be Sylvain’s first time competing in World Superbike at the Assen track. In a press statement Guintoli stated he was really excited for the races this coming weekend and said he will be going all-out for podiums. This task will be difficult, however, as Yamaha’s Toseland has stated his goal is a race victory for the upcoming races at Assen, where he has a strong winning record.
Carlos Checa had the fastest lap time on Day 1 and had a strong podium finish on Day 2. The Spaniard and his team are optimistic about the next round and will be looking to hold their third-place position in the points. World Supersport Parkalgar Honda’s Eugene Laverty lost a bit of ground during Round 3 at Valencia against Kawasaki Motocard.com’s Joan Lascorz and Ten Kate Honda’s Kenan Sofuoglu. Laverty approaches Round 4 with renewed spirits and plans to fight back starting at Assen, a race he previously won in 2009. Meanwhile, Sofuoglu approaches the Assen event with the same advantage of a two-day test at the track that Superbike riders Jonathan Rea and Max Neukirchner had. Current leader in overall points, Joan Lascorz and his team seem confident and enthusiastic about this weekend. Leading the series by four points, Lascorz is looking to follow up a solid victory at Valencia with one at Assen.

Vallelunga, 18 Aprile 2010

DE PUNIET BRILLANT SIXTH AT QUATAR GP

Losail, 11 April: LCR Honda MotoGP racer Randy De Puniet finished in 6th position the Commercialbank Grand Prix of Qatar at Losail floodlit track. With a track temperature of 26°C the premier class riders got underway the first GP of the 2010 season at 23:00 local time and Rossi gained his first seasonal victory at the 5.380Km track with Lorenzo and Dovizioso completing the podium. De Puniet has been making steady progress in every session this week end showing a good pace on race trim. The 29-year-old experienced a good start from the second row following on from an impressive practice session yesterday when the Frenchman aboard the RC212V qualified 4th fastest. At the end of the first lap De Puniet held the 9th place but started to set impressive lap times ending the race as the second Honda rider behind Dovizioso. De Puniet – 6th De Puniet: “All the week end I was up there and I am very satisfied about this result. My start was not that bad but with a bit of traffic I have got a little bit pushed out in the first corner. After that I lapped a smart race as my pace on race trim was really good like the top guys. At 5 laps to go we were 5 seconds behind the leader which is incredible for us as a satellite team. The hard work we have made in the winter and the long run we have been made adjusting the race map have helped us to get this positive result in the first round of the season”

team Althea ancora protagonista

Byrne invece concludeva settimo.

Fantastico Checa!

FANTASTICA VITTORIA DI CHECA IN GARA DUEdomenica 28 febbraio 2010

Gara uno : 1) Haslam (Suzuki) – 2) Fabrizio (Ducati) – 3) Haga (Ducati) – 4) Rea (Honda) – 5) Biaggi (Aprilia) - 6) Guintoli (Suzuki) – 7) Checa (Ducati) …….. 14) Byrne (Ducati)Gara due : 1) Checa (Ducati) – 2) Haslam (Suzuki) – 3) Fabrizio (Ducati) – 4) Guintoli (Suzuki) – 5) Haga (Ducati) - 6) Rea (Honda) – 7) Corser (BMW) …….. 12) Byrne (Ducati)Carlos Checa :”La mia seconda gara è stata perfetta.

Cloudy sky and dry truck today in Phillip Island for the first World Superbike races of the season. The Althea racing team riders worked on the last minute adjustments of their Ducati 1198 bikes during the morning warm up, in order to be ready for the two 22-laps Superbike races. Due to yesterday Superpole upshots, today Carlos Checa lined up from the first row and Shakey Byrne from the fifth.
In race one not a good start for Checa. The Spanish riders did not take advantage from his start from the first row of the grid. In the first few laps Checa was sixth and teammate Shakey, after quite a quick start, was seventeenth. Near to the middle of the race Checa was battling for fourth in a group of six riders while Byrne made up several places up to fourteenth. Checa ended the first race in seventh place and Byrne obtained the fourteenth position.
Also in race two Carlos did not start quickly from the first row, ending the first lap in eighth place. Fifteenth place for Byrne in the first few laps. As the race proceed Checa was able to recover some position and near to the middle of the race he reached the first group of riders in fifth place. Also Byrne recovered quickly and in a few laps he was up tenth position, but caught up in the third group of riders, he was unable to make much progress and concluded in twelfth place. With few laps to go Checa moved up to fourth position and with some incredible overtaking he worked his way up through the field to pass Guintoli, Fabrizio and Haslam to take the lead on the very last lap snatching an extraordinary first victory for Althea racing team.
Carlos Checa: "The second race was perfect. In race one we chose a tyre that was perhaps too hard for the conditions and I found it hard to brake. In race two we selected a better tyre and I could brake much more strongly, I also had a very good pace and was able to pass riders fairly easily. My style of riding actually seemed to mean that tyre wear was less of a problem for me than for some other riders. By the last lap I was up in second and I could finally get pass Haslam. I wanted to pass him earlier but it was impossible and he didn't leave me space to pass until the very end. I am of course extremely happy with the result, it is my first race with the Althea team and on the Ducati 1198 and we have a good package with which to fight this season. My thanks go to the entire team for their hard work and dedication."
Shane Byrne: "The first race I made it was very difficult for myself, I knew I had to make as many passes as possible to get near the front. I pushed to pass Guintoli and Sykes and couldn't make it, so had to go straight. A small problem with the rear brake and it was hard to turn, but anyway I recovered and had good rhythm so I was happy with it, though not so happy with the result. The first thing to say about race two is congratulations to Carlos and to the whole team for the win. Genesio and the team have put together a very competitive machine. There are too many fast riders to be able to start from 18th and expect a good finish, but I got up as far as about tenth place which wasn't so bad, having been caught up in battles with several riders. Today we have seen that there are many riders that can fight for race wins, the level of riding is very good. We go home and concentrate on preparations for Portimao."
Genesio Bevilacqua - General manager: "What can I say? An incredible day. It's the first round of the season and as a team we were well prepared but we didn't expect a Carlos Checa in such amazing form today. It's difficult to win a race at this level and we are extremely satisfied. We worked very hard over recent months to be ready for this weekend, during testing, and so this is an amazing result. Shakey was unfortunately not in perfect shape after the earlier crash but he made good pace in race two and we look forward to Portimao where we know he can be strong. Particular thanks goes to Ducati as it is due to their support that we are here today and celebrating this success. Thanks also to the whole team as their hard work over recent months had led to this incredible result today."

2°,3° e 4° tempo,volano i "nostri" Team!

After four tests sessions over two days, Michel Fabrizio posted the quickest time of all at the official pre-season tests at Phillip Island, a 1'31.650, set on the final morning on his Ducati Xerox machine.
Shane Byrne (Althea Ducati) was second quickest, on a 1'31.662, while Jakub Smrz (Pata B&G Ducati) was one of the riders to improve in the final session, taking his Ducati to third best time, only 0.030 seconds from Fabrizio.
Fastest rider on day one, Carlos Checa (Althea Ducati) was fourth overall, while the first of the four-cylinder riders, Jonathan Rea, was fifth in the combined rankings, having set his personal best time this afternoon on his Hannspree Ten Kate Honda.
The top ten on combined times was rounded out by Noriyuki Haga (Ducati Xerox), Leon Haslam (Suzuki Alstare), Max Biaggi (Aprilia Alitalia Racing), Leon Camier (Aprilia Alitalia Racing) and Max Neukirchner (Hannspree Ten Kate Honda).
Ruben Xaus was top BMW rider, 11th, and the fastest Yamaha man was James Toseland, 12th.
Troy Corser (BMW Motorrad Motorsport) proved quickest of the local riders on show, one place ahead of Lorenzo Lanzi (DFX Corse Ducati) who set 14th best time.
Sylvain Guintoli (Suzuki Alstare) was 15th in a field of 24, and top Kawasaki rider was local man Chris Vermeulen, who took his machine to 16th place.
The top 20 riders were within just over two seconds of each other.
Michel Fabrizio
"I'm satisfied with the lap times because we were consistently fast. I found good race pace with one of the tyre compounds in particular and this bodes well for the weekend, but the result will very much depend on the weather. There are several fast guys here, so it will undoubtedly be a tough race weekend, as well as a hard-fought championship. It's a difficult challenge but I'm ready to face it."
Shane Byrne: "We had a bit of a problem in the afternoon session but it was good to make a fast time this morning. It was a little bit disappointing to get pipped this afternoon. But it is only a test so it is not the end of the world. It's very positive for the team to have both riders high in the rankings going into next weekend. We can't be too upset to finish second today by only a small margin."

Spanish rider Joan Lascorz (Provec Motocard.com Kawasaki) headed the field in the middleweight division at Phillip Island, securing the fastest lap of the tests in this morning's session, with a 1'34.374.
Only one rider improved his best time in the afternoon sector, as track conditions deteriorated due to high winds and a drop in temperature right at the end of the day.
Kenan Sofuoglu (Hannspree Ten Kate Honda) was second in the rankings, 2009 Championship runner-up Eugene Laverty (Parkalgar Honda) was third and Sofuoglu's team-mate Michele Pirro fourth.
Sebastien Charpentier (Triumph BE-1) proved to be in fine form in his championship return, going eighth from 17 riders after two days of testing. He was the fastest Triumph rider at the tests.

Eicma 2009

After the ultimate round of the 2009 season in Valencia, the premier class riders and Teams will be reconvening at Sepang in February for the first test session of 2010 including the LCR Honda MotoGP racer Randy de Puniet who will now have time to continue the full rehabilitation of the ankle he broke back in August. Before moving to the hospital to remove the screws from the left ankle, the Frenchman hit the 67th edition of EICMA fair in Milano last Saturday together with the Team Manager Lucio Cecchinello. The pair have been visiting the Team supporters stands (GIVI, REVI’T!, Arrow, PBR, Rapid Bike, Rizoma, Fren Tubo, Elf, Progrip and Mediaset) for the whole day taking photos and signing postcards to hundreds of fans. Randy: “Before going to the hospital to remove the seven screws from my ankle, I preferred to spend one day at EICMA with Lucio and I really enjoyed the atmosphere! The fans have been very warm with me and the Team supporters have been very friendly. I’d like to thank them for their support during the last season and hope to share positive results with them in the future”. Cecchinello: “EICMA is one of the most important event for those who work in the two wheels market and it is also a unique event for the fans because they can meet their favourites. Randy has been very friendly and nice with everybody and I am pretty sure we will be coming next year too thanks to the warmth and the hospitality of our supporters”.
